Belladonna of Sadness (1973)Belladonna of Sadness is a mind-dazzling, animated, surreal, psychedelic, erotic fever dream. The director and his studio must have been heavily tripping on acid while creating this fascinating orgy of weirdness in a graceful, romantic, 1970s Jugendstil-revival style, complemented by a contemporary psychedelic jazzrock soundtrack. Every time you think you've seen it all, an even weirder scene follows. I loved the numerous visual allegories, such as the bubonic plague melting a village into a black lake of decay. Once I started experiencing Belladonna of Sadness I was so fascinated that I remained glued to the screen until the end. Be prepared, you will either love this or hate it. Don't expect a conventional plot build-up, expect a flirtation with insanity.
