Das Boot (1981)

I very rarely give a 5-star rating to a film, but I think Das Boot definitely deserves it. Das Boot might very well be the first anti-war film I ever consciously experienced, and it made a lasting impression on me when I saw it for the first time as a boy. The ending kept haunting me. I think just about every aspect of Das Boot is brilliant — the cast, the charismatic captain, the impression of authenticity, the technical details, the almost unbearable moments of sheer tension, the boredom of the men, the hope, the disillusionment, the despair, you feel it as if you are part of the submarine's crew. Das Boot is an experience that has survived the test of time, a cinematic gem that shows unbreakable wartime comradeship as well as the cold reality of war — death and senselessness.
