Come and See (1985)I expected Come and See to be a grim portrait of the cold reality of war. Part of it unmistakably is that, but I didn't expect it to be wrapped in Tarkovsky-style theatrical absurdism, resulting in what you might call Die Blechtrommel (The Tin Drum, 1979) on acid. In the first half of Come and See there were scenes that gave me a rush of goosebumps, particularly the nightmarish, Lynchian scenes with the stork in the forest. In the middle part, Come and See temporarily lost its momentum. The camera kept chasing raging or mumbling people, and the narrative seemed a bit lost. I also disliked the chaotic, hysterical scenes with lots of screaming people and military vehicles moving back and forth across the screen. All in all, Come and See definitely is a fascinating, apocalyptic 'war opera' that impressively reflects the hatred towards the Nazis for brutally murdering thousands of innocent villagers in Belarus. On a final note, Olga Mironova is mesmerizingly beautiful. Her face close-ups are like a Pre-Raphaelite painting. I particularly loved her dance scene in the forest.
