a review of 环太平洋

After reading many destructive reviews of Pacific Rim at IMDb, I knew the best way to approach it was by lowering my expectations to a minimum. Armed with that mindset I found out that the movie is actually quite entertaining. I mean: how can you not like gigantic robots fighting gigantic monters? The CGI is top-notch, and the actors are cool, particularly the charismatic Idris Elba, an actor I admire ever since I saw his performance in the great Luther BBC series. Yeah, the plot is predictable and full of cliches, but if cliches are used in a good way, they can become a strength. Pacific Rim is a film like an exciting computer game, unpretentious and larded with winks to sci-fi / monster classics such as Blade Runner and the Godzilla movies. Watch it with a couple of beers and a bowl of crisps, and there's a good chance you'll enjoy it like I did.
