Sweetie (1989)

So, today I learned that Jane Campion was once sort of a 1980s predecessor to Wes Anderson and Aki Kaurismäki. Sweetie is an intriguing indie production about a dysfunctional family. Filmed in a pleasant absurdist style, Campion’s talent for eye-catching screen compositions was already present in these early days of her career. I liked Sweetie’s first half more. Similarly to The Lobster (2015), the absurdism gimmick wore out, leaving me with a slightly dragging second half. But overall I enjoyed it. Last but not least... Any film that features a Commodore 64 can't fail to me. ❤
