The American (2010)Being an admirer of Corbijn's signature moody photography and his successful portrait of Joy Division (Control), I was eager to see The American. The movie left me with mixed feelings. I expected more. More mood and drama in the cinematography and soundtrack; more character depth; more evoked emotions. The American did not grab me as I hoped it would. It felt a little uninspired. And it also didn't help that Thekla Reuten is a compatriot of mine. Her familiar Dutch accent bothered me. Corbijn is also a fellow countryman by the way, but that doesn't matter, so are Paul Verhoeven and Rutger Hauer, whom I both love.
