The Boys in the Band (1970)

The Boys in the Band is a groundbreaking film about homosexuality, directed by William Friedkin. The film is centered around a birthday party, and starts as a light-hearted comedy, but gradually converges into a tense, layered drama. I can imagine why this film was important for homosexuals back in 1970, when the subject was still a huge taboo, especially in films. The Boys in the Band has withstood the test of time remarkably well, with strong dialogues and a growing sense of bitterness and melancholy as the film progresses. It's very sad to know that a number of cast members has died of AIDS. Adding The Boys in the Band to The Exorcist and The French Connection, I can safely state that Friedkin is a brilliant, visionary director.
