Incredible flick! A retro-stylish and surreal fever-dream-turned-nightmare in which the teenagers of a small town prepare for what is supposed to be the most important day of their life. They all gather at a local diner where they go through a series of strange coming of age rituals, during which each of them finds a partner, then after sunset they literally disappear as they walk off into the night. Have they all left town? Have they exited this reality completely? As cutesy as this first half might be, it’s the second part that really got to me which is dealing with the people left behind, including some of the teens who for one reason or another haven’t made it to or bailed out of the previously depicted events. The implication being that everyone still left in this town has missed his one chance at… whatever that might have been and is now forever doomed to a depressing and unfulfilled, ghost-like existence in a ghost-like, empty town.
