Sleeping Beauty (1959)Having subscribed to Disney+ to watch Pixar's Soul, the subscription also opened the gate to the old Disney classics. Today I rewatched Sleeping Beauty. The last time I saw it was so long ago that I remembered almost nothing, and I enjoyed this rewatch a lot. There's just something about the old school Disney magic that is irreplaceable. It's a fine balance between contemporary naivety and the obvious inspiration and motivation of developing a still relatively new and exciting medium: animation. The scenes in which the prince and princess dance on magical 1950s choir music are so perfectly romantic that they made me all emotional. For a moment it brought me back to who I was before life made me blunt: a hopeless romantic who fell in love way too easily. Aesthetically, I loved the clear, graphic, expressive style of the characters, and the gorgeously stylized backgrounds, with lots of daring square shapes. Of course, the Disney Classics are soaked in virtue, but a good old-fashioned happy ending can be pleasant every now and then.
