Included in Rapid Eye Movies' / Third Window Films' "The Pink Films Vol. 5+6" set as a bonus feature, this film appears to have survived only in the form of a german dubbed theatrical print. Not the best omen since, as a german dude, i have developed a strong distaste for german dubs or, for that matter, any kind of movie dub outside of animation. But yeah, if a dub is all we have to work with, i might as well give that one a chance.
Underwhelming voice acting aside, i thought this was by far the weakest film in the whole anthology. Both in terms of visuals and plot, this is nothing to write home about, far removed from the inventiveness, smart provocation and visual brilliance most of the other films included have going for them.
Don't even get me started about problematic subtexts and how the film expects the viewer to feel sympathy for the wounded masculinity of a main protagonist who turns out to have assaulted, abused and finally killed his ex-girlfriend. With these old pink flicks, you kinda get used to depictions of rape and abuse without much context or judgement. I have no clue how japanese audiences of the time have felt about this (i mean like... did they feel disgust and sadness about what they saw or did they actually find that shit arousing?), but at least as a viewer, i can make up my own mind about it. However, when a film asks me to identify with an abuser, rapist, murderer... even the blurriest of lines has been crossed in my view.
