I've seen this film described as Kaurismäki-meets-Lynch a lot and initially i was rather opposed to that notion, as this is a pretty uniqe film of its own that doesn't need to rely on such comparisons. Yet with a bit of hindsight, it makes a lot of sense aswell.
We've got our deadpan and quiet characters just trying to survive in face of some almost biblical, apocalyptic shit being thrown their way which accounts for the Kaurismäki vibe.
On the Lynch side of things, in addition to a few suspiciously surreal sequences and visuals, there's also the vaguely lynchian notion of a community becoming the pawns in the games and whims of some mysterious higher power. Be it some actual deity or just the gears of corporate power taking advantage of them... and what does it matter to them which is which, really? It feels very much the same to those in the midst of - and trying to make sense of - it all. An intruguing little film, this one.
