Profondo rosso - Review

Dario argento both at the top of his game and at his most coherent (don't expect too much logic and realistic, reasonable behavior from any character in a giallo flick though...), this is another feast for the eyes and the subconscious, while staying clear of offending your intellect so much that you can't overlook its still quite blaring inconsistencies. Watching italian genre cinema in its "original" language is always the better choice, it turns out. Even if the italian dub sucks as much as the english one, i'm less likely to notice. In this one, you might almost convince yourself that it's written and acted by human beings rather than space aliens trying to emulate human behavior. Attemps at humor kinda work... some of the time. Some faux-feminist commentary in this, although it's coming across not remotely as forced and hypocritical as in, say, Tenebrae (1982), where a satirical commentary on the film's own misogyny and chauvinism (kinda comes with the genre, sadly) just left the worst kind of taste in my mouth. Also i'm still wondering if i shuould classify some of the films subtext as just subtly or blatantly homophobic, deliberately or by accident/ineptitude... it's a 70s giallo all right.
