Dracula (1979)Well, this was a nice surprise. I expected a dated, campy 1970s Dracula adaptation, but this wasn't bad at all, regarded in a contemporary context. Frank Langella establishes an intriguing, charismatic Dracula character, the Gothic decors would make Tim Burton drool, and some scenes are haunting, such as Dracula climbing down a wall in slow-motion. The film is quite true to Bram Stoker's original Dracula story, and the overall atmosphere pleasantly reminded me of the many Hammer House of Horror films from the 1970s, most of which were much campier and much more low-budget than this Dracula incarnation. As a final note, it was interesting to see Donald Pleasence as the doctor of a mental institution, one year after he played a very similar role in John Carpenter's classic Halloween.
