Included in Arrow Films’ American Horror Project anthology, this is another surprisingly fascinating and - for a low budget (s)exploitation flick - rather well made entry. Shot in 1971 but not released until 1976, this film has the questionable honor of being one of the original “video nasty” titles. Given that, you’ll be surprised that this is more of a psychological drama/thriller rather than a straightforward horror film, dealing with the heavy theme of childhood sexual abuse while also being a strong critique of commercialized mass media and the drug culture of its time. Also of its time, rather unfortunately, is the trope of a surviver of childhood sexual trauma growing up into a brutal murderer. Yeah, cinema’s understanding of human psychology has come a long way since then and leaves much room for improvement even today. Still, there’s plenty to admire about this film.
