The Best Offer (2013)

The Best Offer is an interesting effort, but also a flawed one. My major complaint is the far-fetched plot, particularly the not at all surprising twist towards the end. Geoffrey Rush delivers a strong performance, as usual, but the supporting roles failed to convince me. The know-it-all mechanic (Jim Sturgess) annoyed me, and the hauntingly beautiful Sylvia Hoeks mainly served as an elusive work of living art, disguising an implausible character. Some plot elements just couldn't be digested, such as a wealthy, seasoned, respected, even feared art auction master who has no experience with women at all, and turns into a naive adolescent when faced with a beautiful young girl. Having said all this, I did enjoy the cinematography and art direction. The movie's style is of a high quality, but the plot is not.
