All i could think of while watching this was that by the 50’s it’s already been about time the Universal horror era came to an end, with a lot of the horror genre becoming more thoughtful and sophisticated over the course of the following decades.

Creature from the Black Lagoon is a pretty by-the-numbers creature feature with weakly written, stereotypical characters that also doesn’t impress much on a visual level apart from a few good shots. It seems like the Universel execs already knew this thing couldn’t turn out too great, so the marketing relied on the film’s four major gimmicks: 3D, underwater cinematography, monster suit, beautiful actress. That’s not enough to fill out even these short 80 minutes of running time.

I suggest you watch The Shape Of Water instead.
