Forbidden Planet - Review
Apart from the outmoded sexual politics, the long-winded speeches characteristic of science fiction writing of this era, and the attempts at comedy with the cook character, I thought this was pretty great. I think the romance subplot was kind of forced into it because audiences expected that kind of thing, I don't think they really landed it though. It was quite clear that lots of moviemakers thought so too from the number of scenes and themes that made their way into the following decades of SF flicks. The score was discordant but I respect how it imagined thoroughly alien sounds instead of dishing up symphony orchestras in space or whatnot. The business with the invisible unstoppable monster was genuinely scary even with the level of practical effects possible in the 1950s. Watch this once, think about it for years afterwards.
