Return of Sabata - Review

Wikipedia informs me that "Return of Sabata was listed in the 1978 book The Fifty Worst Films of All Time" - a book that apparently also slams Last Year at Marienbad (1961). Put simply, it makes me wonder if the authors have ever seen an actual bad movie as this one, while far from being a masterpiece, is also nowhere near the worst of anything. After an unfortunate recasting of the hero in the trilogy's middle part, here we get Lee Van Cleef back in the lead role who's always a delight to watch. While yeah, this thing is entirely ridiculous and bonkers from start to finish, it's also creative as hell and exactly the kind of dumb fun you're looking for in an artifact from the tail end of the spaghetti western era. The opening sequence kinda feels like the genre filtered through the surreal psychedelic haze of 60s Seijun Suzuki or Yasuharu Hasebe's washes of color in his exploitation classic Stray Cat Rock: Sex Hunter.
