Possession (1981)

Last time I had seen Possession was as a youngster in the late 1980s. I remembered it being good, and I wanted to refresh my impression.  To be honest I couldn’t get into it this time. The stageplay-style overly dramatic acting and the constantly moving camera made me nervous. I also missed a gradual buildup. Before you knew it Sam Neill’s character was all messed-up. I missed some structure and character establishment in the narrative. The bad audio quality also didn’t help my overall impression. After about fifteen to twenty minutes into the film I decided to stop watching it. It’s a pity I couldn’t enjoy more of Isabella Adjani. She used to be an adolescent crush of mine. I think I’ll soon rewatch Werner Herzog’s take on Nosferatu, which also features Adjani.
