a review of 野狼

The realistic nature of Hombre pleasantly surprised me. I expected a somewhat dated classic Western, but Newman's pragmatic, embittered antihero character is quite fascinating, and the usual shiny coating of Hollywood glamour is remarkably absent. It is clear that the year in which Hombre was made — 1967 — marked a time of change. Romanticized stories about how the West was won were gradually replaced by critical views upon the subject matter. A fine movie, I really enjoyed it.
