a review of 血战钢锯岭

Too bad Letterboxd doesn't allow more detailed ratings, as I would like to give Hacksaw Ridge a rating of 6 ½ out of 10. Being based on a true story often gives films an extra dimension, and Hacksaw Ridge is overall a solid film. The battle scenes are skillfully choreographed, and don't gloss over the filth and insanity of warfare, as you've come to expect from a modern day war movie. Nevertheless, I often felt detached from the on-screen events. The film failed to grab me by the throat. The story build-up and the all-American soldier characters were still too by-the-book Hollywood-esque. Also, the emphasis on the main hero's religious faith started to annoy me.
