a review of 魔法奇幻秀

after a friend suggested we watch this, i vowed to double check every movie she recommends from now on because she doesn't seem to notice or care about really problematic elements. i realized i hadn't reviewed it at the time but i'm cautiously dipping my toe back into Gilliam films after this one scared me off. i made a thread on mastodon about it when i saw it, so i'll include my thoughts from that reminder that the girl in this film is supposed to be FIFTEEN YEARS OLD who is (implied) sleeping with 30 something Colin Farrell/Depp/Law/Ledger's character. as someone who was a 15 year old girl (ostensibly) once, they are not vessels for people's fantasies. this really alienated me from this film. the gaze about her the whole time is uncomfortable. i wish i could have enjoyed this film more (i love Tom Waits!) but that took me right out of it.
