The Child - Review

So with this i've finally finished Arrow Films' American Horror Project anthology - that is, unless we're about to get additional volumes in the future which i certainly wouldn't turn down. This journey through mostly underappreciated areas of independent american horror film history has been thoroughly fascinating and rewarding. The Child once again unites many of the best and worst aspects of seventies independent production - in quite a good way, as the wildly uneven acting performances, odd directoral and storytelling choices; eccentric and inventive visuals, heavy atmosphere and a weird mix of genres (supernatural "demon child"-kind of horror seemlessly blending into some sort of zombie survival action) blend together into the kind of surreal, dream logic-driven experience you rarely get out of higher budget horror flicks. Said final act is unfortunately also one of the films weakest points, reducing the characterization of its leading lady to a helplessly cowering, hysterically screaming piece of flesh devoid of any rational survival instinct, only functioning as a token to be saved by a tough dude sacrificing himself for her sake. Yeah, very progressive i gotta say... Well, i usually try to be lenient towards films as old and obscure like this, but that terrible choice kinda took me out of it - otherwise i'd rate this one a notch higher.
