Is this just my personal bias or is there an unusual amount of films being released lately reckoning with the experience of growing up christian and the abundant hypocrisy inherent in that culture? *The Miseducation Of Cameron Post* and *Porno* are just two other recent examples that come to mind. Also, all of these films center on the christian mindset towards sexuality - which makes perfect sense, as this is still the number one contentious topic across most denominations, the one most charged with an aura of sin and guilt among christians, the biggest deal no one dares to open up or even talk about although it should be well known at this point that porn consumption spikes in the bible belt as well as around christian holidays - don't even get me started about the ubiquitous cases of sexual abuse connected to pretty much any kind of church. Yeah, being an ex-christian myself, i can certainly confirm that young christians are kinda being set-up from the start to become a sexually disfunctional bunch, trapped in a vicious cycle of hornyness and shame. I'm rather glad that movies like these are being made lately. Apart from the possibility of raising awareness in some people that they're being constantly gaslit for their behavior to be easily controlled by shame and guilt, while any percieved dependency on their religious institutions is reinforced along the way... The satire here is really sharp and spot-on. Not so much in the laugh out loud kind of way but rather in a "Yeah, i've been there, done that." kind of fashion that anyone who's ever been deeply embedded in christian culture can relate to.
