La planète sauvage had been high on my watchlist for a long time, and it didn’t disappoint. I consider it as original and imaginative as animated cult classics like Belladonna of Sadness, also from 1973, and Angel’s Egg (1985). The delicious psychedelic surrealism pleasantly reminded me of my favorite comic book series when I was a child: Philémon, by the late French comic creator Fred (Frédéric Aristidès), depicting wonderfully imaginative alternate worlds that were situated on imaginary islands formed by the letters “ATLANTIC OCEAN” on world maps.
