I thought Get Carter was an intriguing old school crime slow-burner, with a certain level of nihilistic realism that was characteristic for the early 1970s. Other contemporary examples are Dirty Harry, The French Connection and Straw Dogs.  The charismatic young Michael Caine is the personification of cool, and throughout the film I kept thinking how Get Carter must have been an inspiration for Guy Ritchie’s gangster film oeuvre.
