Ladyhawke (1985)

Ladyhawke is one of those 1980s classics I still hadn't seen in all those years, and I finally watched it in 2017. To be honest I expected more of it. I'm a Richard Donner aficionado ever since the original Superman movie, The Omen, and of course Lethal Weapon. But Ladyhawke left a dated, campy, limited-budget impression on me, and almost felt like a television grade film aimed at a youngster audience. Rutger Hauer — one of my man crushes — is cool as ever, and Michelle Pfeiffer is ravishingly beautiful. Matthew Broderick annoyed me a little though. His overacting started to get on my nerves. Last but not least I think Ladyhawke's synthesizer score was a bad decision. A powerful orchestral score would have fitted the medieval fantasy genre much better. In stead, the light, poppy synth tracks make Ladyhawke sound like an early 1980s B movie. When it comes to 1980s Fantasy films, I prefer Ridley Scott's Legend, with the Jerry Goldsmith score, not the Tangerine Dream variation. I've got nothing against Tangerine Dream, but when it comes to fantasy adventure films I prefer a traditional orchestral score.
