Halloween (1978)

I must have been about ten years old when I first saw Halloween part 2 in a local movie theatre. Together with my first VHS video, Cronenberg’s Scanners, Halloween II initiated a love for gore horror movies during my adolescent years and beyond. I watched Halloween II multiple times before I finally watched part 1, and remember at the time I found part 1 reasonably boring compared to the relatively action-packed sequel. Later I started to appreciate the original more than the sequel though. And finally, I rewatched part 1 on Halloween eve 2015, to refresh my impression. Halloween's plot turned out to have become slightly dated. Since the movie came out in 1978, every horror cliché has been used and abused countless times, so the scare factor has completely diminished for me. But Halloween is more than just a scary movie. It has become an iconic classic because of the fantastic atmosphere John Carpenter has managed to establish with his brilliant self-made musical score and the atmospheric night cinematography. Last but not least, the convincing performance of Jamie Lee Curtis really completes the lasting impression.
