When Marnie Was There (2014)

Ghibli did it again. When Marnie Was There beautifully portrays the melancholy, magic and, ultimately, tragic transience of heartfelt childhood friendships, particularly friendships that grow during a childhood vacation, followed by the painful need to say goodbye. The Victorian Marnie character was so romantic, and her friendship with Anna was so disarming, it pleasantly brought me back to my childhood years, when I used to watch the Candy Candy anime series on television. The characters have depth, particularly Marnie is mesmerizing. The animation is great, the background scenery is gorgeous, the music effectively amplifies the atmosphere, and the storytelling is captivating. Ghibli has managed to recreate the timeless magic of the early Disney years with their productions, but with a completely distinctive style. I respectfully bow for such brilliance.
