The Mitchells vs. the Machines (2021)I was afraid of this. The Mitchells versus The Machines didn't work for me. Let me try to explain... I found it too hysterical, too contrived, forced, hectic and over the top. It was filled with the usual textbook animation cliches, such as: dysfunctional all-American family experiences a perilous adventure which brings them together in the end. As the events were unfolding in a predominantly hectic pace, I felt detached from what was happening. It just didn't grab me, and I couldn't feel sympathy for the characters. In fact, the mother and the teenage daughter slightly irritated me. The fashionable animated social media stickers that were larded throughout the film didn't quite improve my impression. And please stop the hackneyed endless references to retro films. Even the wink to a slick tech event has already been done too many times in animation by now, for example in Next Gen (2018), which has more striking similarities to The Mitchells versus The Machines, and I liked Next Gen a lot more. Okay, the scenes with the Furbies did make me chuckle, I'll admit that. 😉 I guess this cynical old fart is gradually leaning more and more towards his trusty old reality TV about serial killers and other perdition. The three-star rating is for the animation execution, which is very good.
