The Wicker Man (1973)

I've been intrigued by The Wicker Man for a long time, having read the synopsis and a number of reviews. But at the same time I was afraid of a let-down because the film might have become dated. Luckily it turned out to be a pleasant surprise. I loved the weird 1970s atmosphere and the odd blend of uncanniness and religious satire. The surreal situations, the 1970s folk music, the festival of fools with carnivalesque costumes, the nude pagan ritual, the uncanny animal masks, and the freakish finale, it all fits together so well. If David Lynch would have been asked to direct a Hammer House of Horror production, it would probably have been something similar to The Wicker Man. Christopher Lee clearly enjoyed playing his character, and Britt Ekland was the embodiment of female perfection.
