a review of 战争游戏

WarGames (1983)I clearly remember the nuclear world war anxiety I had as a kid in the 1980s. The rivalry between Russia and the USA felt like a sword of Damocles that could be unleashed upon the world at any moment. It had been many years since I saw WarGames, and I expected a very light-hearted 1980s youngster movie. For the most part this is true, but when you rewatch films at a later age, they can turn out to have more depth than you previously realized. Watching WarGames as an adolescent, I didn't fully pick up the many satirical elements, such as the caricatural portrayals of government officials and military officers. I also love the thought-provoking message beneath the playful surface of WarGames, emphasized by some strong quotes, such as "General, you are listening to a machine! Do the world a favor and don't act like one." And the computer's statement about global thermonuclear war: "A strange game. The only winning move is not to play." Last but not least, being an 8-bit computing veteran I loved the childhood nostalgia of old school computer equipment, dial-up modems, early vector graphics, and illegal telephone calls with the help of tech trickery. With the Artificial Intelligence revolution about to break through, including (ab)use of AI for military purposes, WarGames might prove to be a more prophetic film than it was previously considered to be.
