Being 17 (2016)

Quand on a 17 ans is a French take on Brokeback Mountain (2005). It's even situated in the mountains as well, and also involves a young cattle farmer. Add the similar God's Own Country (2017), which was the equally contrived Irish country-side version of Brokeback Mountain, and a genre seems to be established. I've always thought Brokeback Mountain is overrated, and so is Quand on a 17 ans in my humble opinion. I don't understand why the acting is praised a lot. The performance of the main characters is overall decent, but the parents are quite irritating, and the fight between the main characters in the mountains is laughably unconvincing. Quand on a 17 ans feels like a television-grade production, and although there are great TV films, this one failed to grab me, and I started fast-forwarding through the second half of the film. When it comes to homosexuality-themed films, I enjoyed The Boys in the Band (1970), Gohatto (1999), A Single Man (2009) and Dallas Buyers Club (2013) much more.
