The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley (2019)

The Inventor is a fascinating watch, following the spectacular rise and fall of Theranos, a Silicon Valley mega-company that couldn't live up to its promise of changing the world, and finally turned out to be a huge scam. The documentary predominantly follows the person(ality) behind the fake-it-till-you-make-it fiasco: the Steve Jobs wannabe Elizabeth Holmes, who either lived / lives in a self-constructed alternate reality, or is a narcissistic, shrewd swindler. Either way, she succeeds in convincing tons of people — scientists, journalists, rich investors, hundreds of employees and many others — that she's a world-changing genius. Even when the unstable empire is falling apart, many people want to remain loyal to that conviction, refusing to acknowledge the downfall. Elizabeth and her piercing eyes are prominent in about 80 percent of the footage, so I was afraid I'd dream about her after I had seen The Inventor.
