mother! (2017)Years after creating Requiem for a Dream, Darren Aronofsky delivers 'Requiem for a Nightmare', in the shape of 'Mother!' I saw this at the megasensationalfantabuloussurround big screen home theater of a videophile friend of mine, so the experience was quite intense. 'Mother!' impressed me. The film has got an uncanny atmosphere like only Aronofsky can establish. You don't trust any character except the main character, convincingly performed by Jennifer Lawrence. Her husband Javier Bardem manages to be creepy throughout the entire film, without actually behaving creepily, which is quite an achievement. 'Mother!' gradually builds up from an uncomfortable dream towards a nightmarish climax that will shake you up. The events brought several allegories to my mind, including how social media works: the never-satisfying addictiveness of getting praised with hollow likes and comments from strangers, and the valuable real-life social interaction with friends and family you tend to give up for it. I thought 'Mother!' was a fascinating, dark, surreal fairy-tale. It's one of those polarizing either-you-love-it-or-hate-it films, but for me it worked well.
