This drama tells the story of the Oushu Fujiwara clan spanning generations, 140 years in the late Heian era. They established their domain in Touhoku area (North-east area of Japan), independent from the rule of Minamoto clan.

故事梗概为：在长野县冈谷的缫丝工厂里，有百余名来自歧阜县穷乡僻壤的“少女军团”，峰、华和菊是其中的代表。她们告别家乡的亲人，翻越野麦岭，踏上了异乡的求生之路。而等待她们的却是超负荷的劳动和资本家的压榨剥削。峰终因积劳成疾，不幸染上当时的不治之症——肺结核。资本家怕其他女 工也被传染，便通知峰的家属把她接走。峰的哥哥星夜兼程，赶到工厂，从破旧的草屋中找到奄奄一息的峰。他决心翻越群山密林，把病入膏肓的妹妹背回故乡。时值金秋时节，野麦岭上层林尽染，美不胜收。趴在哥哥的背上，峰的眼睛里闪出激动的光芒：“哥哥，我看到飞驒了。”说完，她永远地合上了双目。野麦岭上的冷箭竹默默地注视着这幕情景，欲哭无泪……
1903年。一百多名年轻姑娘越过野麦岭，来到山安足立厂做女工。三年以后，阿峰已经能够独立操作，和阿雪一同被称作是优秀女工，阿时和阿花等人则技术较差。由于受到不堪的辱骂阿时自杀死去。无家可归的阿雪在新年到来之时倍感孤独，遂对老板的儿子春夫以身相许。厂里的金库被盗，盗窃者实际上是春夫。老板怀疑是会计新吉干的。阿菊喜欢新吉，便向管理员黑木求情，黑木却趁机将她奸污。阿菊与新吉投江自杀。阿花和管理员代理英松相爱，英松很同情女工们。阿雪已怀上春夫的骨肉，春夫却和一个银行老板的女儿订婚。想回家将孩子生下来的阿雪在翻越野麦岭时流产。1908年美国发生经济危机，日本生丝出口受到影响，只好转向国内市场。为谋取利润，工厂强迫女工高强度生产，阿峰因过度劳累得了结核病，被踢出工厂。哥哥来背她回去，翻过高岗时阿峰死去。

The drama depicts the daily lives of three women of the marriageable age who are desperately trying to make some memories before they get married.

A noble samurai serving the Shogun as 'Kogi Kaishaku-nin' (Official Executioner) is the target of a plot by the evil Yagyu Clan to take away his position and replace him with a member of their own family. When his wife is murdered and evidence is produced that he was plotting against the Shogun the Code of Bushido calls for him and his son to commit sepuku. Instead he defies the Shogun's orders and takes up arms against his enemies, becoming an assassin for hire.
