　　第一场，哈里（Harry）和莎拉（Sarah）夫妇。鲍比带着美食来到他们家，莎拉表示自己在节食，哈里在戒酒，但很快鲍比发现，莎拉偷吃了蛋糕而哈里偷喝了一杯酒。莎拉在学空手道，鲍比请她表演一下，结果她拿哈里做靶子，两人打闹起来。鲍比最年长，结婚最频繁的乔安娜告诉他，婚姻不过就是两个人一起做的小事。他问哈里是否后悔结婚，哈里表示婚姻让人懊恼也让人庆幸，它能改变你的生活。
　　第二场，皮特（Peter）和苏珊（Susan）夫妇。他们婚姻美满，男才女貌十分般配，也十分恩爱。鲍比无心的和苏珊调情，并说如果哪天他们分手了，一定要第一个告诉他。于是他们说，你是第一个知道我们要离婚的人。
　　第三场，简妮（Jenny）和大卫（David）夫妇。鲍比和他们一起抽大麻，三人十分高兴。简妮有着女强人性格，大卫性格软弱。大卫告诉鲍比，自己其实很有男子气概，只是不爱表露。简妮喋喋不休，但是实际上什么也没说。他们问鲍比为什么不结婚，鲍比告诉他们自己有三个女友，都爱他到发疯，他不知道该如何选择。鲍比离开他们家时，大卫悄悄告诉他，简妮说喜欢大卫的软弱，其实是为了让他高兴说的好话。
　　每个人都想给鲍比物色妻子，每个男人都想要寻找一夜情的刺激。鲍比对自己的现状十分满意，他在寻找和等待一个集合他前几个女友所有优点的人。

　　鲍比吹灭了一半的蜡烛，他的朋友们交流起对他的看法。鲍比终于意识到每个人都有伴侣，而自己形单影只。他的朋友们为他担心，妻子们都认为他该找一个和自己一样的稳重女性，而不是他现在交往的那些随便的姑娘。他带爱普尔回家过夜，爱普尔觉得他家非常温馨，在床上，两人分享了过去约会中的趣闻然后做爱。第二天，爱普尔要登上去巴塞罗纳的飞机，鲍比像以前对其他姑娘一样，有口无心的请她不要走，告诉她自己多么喜欢她，而她竟然当真决定留下来，反让鲍比不知所措。

　　拉里并告诉罗伯特，也许自己就因为她如此放肆才爱她。拉里抽身结帐，乔安娜嘟囔着自己会照顾鲍比。他们离开了，鲍比回想起这段时间的经历，开始质疑朋友们，他们为什么要结婚？但是最终他发现自己和他们一样，尽管会面临痛苦，他仍然希望与人相伴。
回到演出开场的晚会上，朋友们等了两小时，鲍比仍然没有出现。随后他们纷纷祝愿他生日快乐，回家去了。鲍比终于回到家，微笑着吹灭蜡烛。
