In the far-off future of 2001, a young boy from outer space lands on earth inside a flying peach. The boy (named Apple) is adopted by a Catholic priest, but soon disappears. Three schoolgirls decide to search for him, and soon find evidence that he is being held captive in a trendy dance club. What is the club owner doing with him, and will his adopted father ever see him again?

A man and a little girl meet in a bicycle parking in Tokyo. The little girl says she wants to watch the sea, and their travel begins. The man does not intend to be a kidnapper – he asks the girl to phone her mother and tell her she's with him. During their trip they meet various people, but they always must continue on, lest the man be arrested.

警視庁の窓際部署「特命係」の杉下右京（水谷豊さん）が、“相棒”と共に数々の難事件に挑む人気刑事ドラマ。恒例の元日スペシャルだが、今回は昨年の元日スペシャルに登場した大物議員・袴田茂昭（片岡孝太郎さん）が再登場する。
袴田は元与党政調会長で政界に大きな影響力を持つ。昨年の元日スペシャルでは、殺人教唆したことを特命係に暴かれそうになるも、秘書に罪をなすりつけて逮捕・起訴を免れた。右京にとっては、あと一歩のところまで追い詰めたが逮捕できなかった“因縁の相手”だ。
今回は、袴田の屋敷に「邸内の金塊を盗む」と不穏な予告状が届き、特命係がその捜査に乗り出す……というストーリー。右京に恨み骨髄で、その恐ろしさを身をもって知っている袴田は、予告状のことを嗅ぎつけた右京の訪問を避けるため、「賊（右京）が容易に入り込めぬよう工夫してくれ」と使用人に命じ、塀に有刺鉄線を張り巡らせようとする徹底ぶり。一方、そんな袴田の用心も無意味だといわんばかりに、右京が相棒の亀山薫（寺脇康文さん）と共に屋敷にすんなり入り込む様が面白い。
今回、特命係には新たな出会いもある。「熟年探偵団」を名乗る大門寺（斉木しげるさん）、串田（佐藤B作さん）、野崎（井上肇さん）のトリオと、3人のブレーン・大門寺寧々（茅島みずきさん）だ。鋭い推理力と観察眼を持つ若き才媛・寧々率いる「熟年探偵団」は、いくつかの事件を解決に導き話題になっており、右京も興味を持つ。そして行きがかり上、特命係と「熟年探偵団」が、袴田邸の金塊盗難予告の捜査で競うことになる。右京と美少女探偵の対決にも注目だ。

Intrepid tax investigator Ryoko Itakura sets her sights on the mysterious and philandering Hideki Gondo, a suspected millionaire and proprietor of a thriving chain of seedy hourly hotels, who has for years succeeded at hiding the true extent of his assets from the Japanese authorities. Itakura and Gondo soon find themselves engaged in a complicated, satirical battle of wits.

In Shibamata, Tokyo, Tora-san's family prepares for a wedding. Meanwhile, the traveling Tora-san meets an old acqaintance in Iwate Province. Tora-san refuses to drink with him, afraid that the acquaintance, now settled and married, will again become attracted to Tora-san's wandering existence. Tora-san becomes attracted to a female barber, but must break off their relationship so that she too can live a secure life. She instead gets into an abusive relationship with a motorcyclist.

A 1920s playwright meets a beautiful woman who may be the ghost of his patron's deceased wife.

浅見光彦（沢村一樹）は、母・雪江（加藤治子）と急遽、広島へ行くことになった。知り合いの美也子（菊池裕子）が何者かに殺害されたのだ。美也子は10年前に失われた記憶を取り戻すため、かつて旅行したルートを辿っていた。10年前に“後鳥羽法皇の伝説を辿る旅”と銘打って友人と旅行をした際、土砂崩れの事故に遭って友人を亡くした美也子は、その時のショックで記憶が一時なくなっていたのだ。広島に着いた光彦は、事件を調べている野上刑事（佐藤B作）と出会う。最初は光彦を不審に思う野上だが、的を射た光彦の推理にいつしか協力するようになっていく。実は、光彦がこの事件に執着するのには理由があった。10年前、美也子と旅行中に事故に遭い、亡くなった友人というのが光彦の妹・祐子（林美穂）だったからだ。
一方、地元警察ではエリート警部・桐山道夫（羽場裕一）を筆頭に捜査本部が置かれ、美也子殺害事件の本格的な調査が始まる。捜査線上に浮上してきた人物が次々と殺害されていく中、光彦はある推理をする。“今回の事件は妹・祐子の事故死と関係がある…”と。そして、光彦自身も知らなかった祐子の事故の新事実が明らかになる。

This is a story of two physicians who are complete opposites. Although he's a skilled surgeon, Dr. Shiba does not believe that every life is worth saving, but is willing to perform any surgery for the right price. On the other hand, Dr. Ishikawa is an idealist who believes that doctors should treat all patients equally and fight to protect every person's right to live. Therefore, Ishikawa quickly becomes liked by hospital staff while Shiba continues to make enemies.

A major newspaper has informally decided to employ a female university student. However, shock ripples within the newspaper because of a weekly magazine’s scoop that she is the daughter of the criminal in a serious case. This was the kidnapping of a newborn baby at a big hospital 20 years ago. The criminal demanded a ransom from the director of the hospital instead of the parents. But after the criminal had the large sum of money in hand, he died in an accident while being pursued by the police. The baby was never found. Kaji Hidekazu, a former hotshot journalist who has become deadwood in the wake of an incident, is ordered by the newspaper to re-investigate the kidnapping case. He finds out the shocking, tragic truth which had been kept under wraps.

Following the ascension to power of Taira no Kiyomori, the Minamoto clan is exiled. Minamoto no Yoritomo meets Masako, the sister of Hōjō Yoshitoki and later marries her. Following this marriage, the gears of Yoshitoki's destiny begin to turn.
