乔安山(刘佩琦 饰)和雷锋是最最亲密的好战友，岂料他们在执行一次任务时，乔安山倒车时不慎将电灯柱碰倒，砸在了在车尾指挥的雷锋身上，雷锋从此离开了人间。之后乔安山后悔不已，回想起往日雷锋全心全意帮助自己的点点滴滴，乔安山不禁潸然泪下。乔安山决定在自己往后的日子里，要以雷锋为榜样，全心全意为人民服务……

At the end of the 19th century, Shanghai is divided into several foreign concessions. In the British concession, a number of luxurious “flower houses” are reserved for the male elite of the city. Since Chinese dignitaries are not allowed to frequent brothels, these establishments are the only ones that these men can visit. They form a self-contained world, with its own rites, traditions and even its own language. The men don’t only visit the houses to frequent the courtesans but also to dine, smoke opium, play mahjong and relax. The women working there are known as the “flowers of Shanghai”.

Freely adapted from Gabriel García Márquez's Chronicle of a Death Foretold, the film follows the investigation of a local teacher's murder in a small and desperately poor rural village, the story of the crime gradually pieced together from the fragmented memories of witnesses forced to testify at an inquest. Sharing with her Fifth Generation colleagues Chen Kaige and Tian Zhuangzhuang a remarkable eye for the barren landscapes of northern China and a fascination with small-town life — especially those enduring superstitions that Communism failed to erase — director Li Shaohong also introduces several formal innovations, particularly in storytelling structure, that remain unprecedented in Chinese cinema.

抗日战争时期，有一支由三教九流人员组成的杂牌部队，号称新编第三团，团长为原县长段仁义（雷恪生 饰）。为调教这群乌合之众，国民党方面派来两个职业军人，参谋长方向公（袁苑 饰）和谭参谋（谭增卫 饰），并配备报务员白洁芬（宫主 饰）随队与上级联系。由于部队人员组成乌七八糟，各种违纪现象层出不穷，经肃纪整治稍有起色。大敌当前，国军主力撤退，命令新三团留守抵抗，后果可想而知。敌强我弱，方向公急电上峰求援，上峰找借口不予理会，新三团只好孤军奋战，伤亡惨重。段仁义安排上面派来的三人撤走，不料途中遭督战队截杀，仅白洁芬只身逃回。段仁义宣布解散部队，让大家各自逃生，却遭同党伐异......

A married village worker teams up with an old girlfriend to try to dig a well for his water-starved village. The well collapses and they are trapped. Their enforced confinement leads to them exploring their feelings for each other and those around them.
