在故事宁静而强有力的结尾时刻，阿姆菲尔德夫人询问外孙女对当晚发生事件的感想，她平静的回答，爱情充满坎坷也导致很多诡异的结果，但是这些都是无可避免的，最终人们能意识到爱情才是唯一真实的东西。夫人微笑点头睡过去，并平静的死去。
