Five years have passed since Kuryu Kohei's transfer from Tokyo to Ishigaki, and then to Sapporo. He ends up in a small town of Nijigaura in Yamaguchi Prefecture. There, he investigates a murder case involving a local enterprise, Kamoi Group, and the people related to it. Everyone in town thinks he's innocent except Kuryu, whose unorthodox investigation methods perplex not only the townspeople, but his colleagues as well.

Former Formula 2 driver Morita, known as 'Kamikaze Run', is asked by Onodera, an old friend and current representative of a large trade company, to function as intermediary for an auction of vintage cars owned by Morita's former rival Gianpiero, until an accident ended both careers. Onodera invites Morita to stay in his house until the auction, but his wife seems to have a past connection with the guest, while his son takes a huge liking to him, to Onodera’s raising frustration on both fronts. A body found in the mountains of Tohoku, where Muroi has moved, is linked to the Rainbow Bridge incident. Muroi is asked to return to work, and he ponders whether he can keep his promise to his former colleagues. As the investigation progresses, each of the children Muroi has taken in grows up.
