Ricky and Fatso are friends in need. They are in dire need of money since they are only paid slave wages at the bottling factory. However, they become millionaires overnight after buying a winning lottery ticket. 尽管16岁时吴宇森便辍学参加工作，但自幼培养的对电影的热情，却通过在图书馆、书店钻研大量电影理论书籍变得更加投入。这期间，他已经在和一群志同道合的青年拍摄实验电影了。1971年他加入邵氏公司，担任大师张彻的副导，参与制作了《刺马》、《水浒传》等一系列卖座名片，学到了许多专业技巧，而张彻阳刚惨烈的风格更对其产生了深远影响。
在张彻身边呆了几年之后，吴宇森跳槽嘉禾，升为导演正职。1975年处女作《铁汉柔情》上映，票房惨败，同年另一部《女子跆拳群英会》仍不卖座。现在看来，这两部由后来大红大紫的成龙担任动作指导的跟风打斗片，在昔日功夫片泛滥的时代的确没甚可观之处，票房失利倒也在情理之中。
1976年，吴宇森决定改变风格，导演了一部粤语古装歌舞片《帝女花》。虽有1959年的经典版本在前，但该片仍取得了巨大成功，票房收入名列当年第四位，大胜张彻、李翰祥、楚原等前辈力作。若讲扬眉吐气，这是吴宇森的第一回，其次才轮到10年后的《英雄本色》。
