故事背景为徳川幕府时期，一只双尾巨猫忽然现身江户城中，大肆作乱，引起恐慌。“画仙道”的长老十文字得知此为“画兽”，他察觉到这次画兽作乱事件，极有可能是企图造反的地下组织的阴谋，遂请求门生墨屋纸朗（中尾明庆 配音）前来江户调查。
画仙道术一门的门生，都拥有一种特殊能力，能够运用绘画和书法击退画兽。纸卷（浪川大辅 配音）和绘名（古川小百合 配音）就是其中优秀的门生，加上佼佼者纸朗，三名“画仙道”门生与强大的“画兽”进行战斗，他们能否粉碎谋反派的阴谋？
本动画同名脚本从1200多部作品中脱颖而出，荣获第七届的Animax大赏。

After Colony (A.C.) 195. Mankind has moved into space. Thousands of people live on giant orbiting space colonies called "Sides." However, the Earth Government, which rules the colonies, is unjust and cruel. A group of revolutionaries builds five robotic weapons called Gundams and plans to send them to Earth to begin their fight for independence. Piloted by five young men, these Gundams carry the hopes and dreams of freedom of the colonists with them as they descend to Earth to begin Operation Meteor!

After Colony (A.C.) 196. One year after the events of the "Gundam Wing" television series, peace has spread through the Earth Sphere and the colonies. The year is 21XX. Reploids are commonplace now, after Dr. Cain rediscovered Dr. Light's old lab and based several designs off of Dr. Light's original, called "Mega Man X". X, meanwhile, has joined the Maverick Hunters, and works with unit leader Zero under the command of Commander Sigma. It is their job to terminate reploids who have become violent.
