What’s a girl gonna do after the record-smashing Eras Tour? Well, its success sparked the flame inside Taylor Swift that led to her reunion with former collaborators Max Martin and Shellback for her 12th full-length <i>The Life of a Showgirl</i>. “I’ve never been more proud of anything than I am of the Eras Tour,” Swift says. “And I just thought, ‘I want to make an album that I’m that proud of.’ And that was the catalyst for this record and calling up Max and saying, ‘Do you guys want to do this? I’ll come to you.’”

Indeed, in a very showgirl manner, Swift flew back and forth to Sweden between stops on her European leg—remember, the singer-songwriter believes “jet lag is a choice”—to join Martin and Shellback, Swift’s co-writers and producers on some of the most memorable and popular hits of her career (“We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” “22,” “Shake It Off,” “Blank Space,” “Don’t Blame Me,” and “Delicate,” to name a few). The result? A confident, dazzling, at times elegant, at times cheeky, at times sensual pop explosion that examines Swift’s relationships and her fame, which is both deeply personal yet extremely relatable...mostly. (The struggles of “Elizabeth Taylor”—with its thumping rock vibes—can understandably be reserved for the uber-famous showgirls in the room.)

On the album’s first single, “The Fate of Ophelia,” Swift dips back into the Shakespearean well that earned her crossover success and adoring fans. And once again, she turns the Bard’s tale into a romance rather than a tragedy. But this time, it’s more mature and fierce—as the acceptant heroine resigns herself to solitude before the hero ever comes around: “I swore my loyalty to me, myself, and I/Right before you lit my sky up.”

Her muses, of course, will be well-dissected. The aforementioned savior in “Ophelia” is most likely Swift’s husband-to-be, the three-time Super Bowl champion Travis Kelce. (She did, after all, announce the album on his podcast.) And he <i>probably</i> has a few more cuts dedicated to him—the most direct being the saucy, ’70s-funk-infused “Wood” and its “new heights of manhood” revelation.

Surprisingly, “Actually Romantic,” with its semi-stripped-down production, deals not with a lover but with a certain hater. “You think I’m tacky, baby/Stop talking dirty to me/It sounded nasty but it feels like you’re flirting with me/I mind my business, God’s my witness that I don’t provoke it/It’s kind of making me wet,” Swift teases. And “Father Figure” pays homage to George Michael with Swift’s breathy vocals, ending with a menacing act of betrayal by a protégé: “You made a deal with this devil/Turns out my dick’s bigger/You want a fight, you found it/I got the place surrounded.”

Importantly, though, remove Swift’s own potential inspirations and you get what she does best: making dizzying and vibrant songs that speak to universal emotions through her storytelling. The buoyant “Opalite” shows two people finding each other at the right time; baroque-pop “Wi$h Li$t” portrays someone who knows what her heart desires. And “Eldest Daughter,” the famous track 5—generally one of Swift’s most vulnerable on each of her albums—reveals a promise of devotion.

Swift ends the record on its title track, an epic duet with Sabrina Carpenter where the women volley back and forth about a girl named Kitty, perhaps alluding to their own places in the world. “And all the headshots on the walls of the dance hall are of the bitches who wish I’d hurry up and die/But I’m immortal now, baby dolls, I couldn’t if I tried,” Swift sings proudly. In other words, as she’s proven time and time again, she’ll never go out of style.

Taylor Swift Announces New Album ‘The Life of a Showgirl’
Taylor Swift has announced her 12th studio album “The Life of a Showgirl,” hours after posting a mysterious countdown on her website.
Swift does little by accident, and fans instantly started speculating that something would be revealed on the 12th day of the month at 12:12 a.m. ET, when the countdown ran out. In classic Swift form, she did just that, revealing the album title on Travis Kelce’s podcast “New Heights Show.”
The announcement of “The Life of a Showgirl” comes just after Travis Kelce revealed on Instagram that Swift would be appearing on Wednesday as a guest on his “New Heights” podcast, hosted alongside his brother Jason. On Monday, the podcast teased that there would be a special guest, with fans sleuthing that an image with Swift’s outline suggested that she would join them on the show.
Spotify billboards started popping up in New York City and Nashville shortly after the album announcement, with a code leading to a playlist entitled “And, baby, that’s show business for you.” Though it’s a collection of Swift’s tracks, Swift fans will likely try to discern some Easter eggs from the tracklist based on prior record releases. Some have already noted that all the tracks on the playlist were produced by Max Martin and Shellback, suggesting that they could play a pivotal role in the new project.
Swift last released her studio album “The Tortured Poets Department” in April 2024, and followed up two hours later by expanding it into a double album titled “The Anthology.” It would continue to become the best-selling album of the entire year.
“The Life of a Showgirl” comes after a milestone in Swift’s career. In May, she announced that she had purchased her catalog of recordings initially released through Big Machine Records. She retained ownership from Shamrock Capital for a rumored nine-figure sum, revealing that she will be reissuing her old albums that were first sold by Big Machine against her wishes in 2019.
“To say this is my greatest dream come true is actually being pretty reserved about it,” she said at the time. “All I’ve ever wanted was the opportunity to work hard enough to be able to one day purchase my music outright with no strings attached, no partnership, with full autonomy. I will be forever grateful to everyone at Shamrock Capital for being the first people to ever offer this to me. … My first tattoo just might be a huge shamrock in the middle of my forehead.”
Manager Scooter Braun had purchased the catalog in 2019 from Big Machine, which Swift had left the previous year, before Shamrock acquired it in 2020. According to a source close to the sale, the rumored price range of nine figures was “highly inaccurate,” with insiders saying that it was closer to the $300 million Shamrock paid for it.
Swift attempted to reclaim ownership of her narrative by re-recording her past records. She released the first of her re-recordings — “Fearless (Taylor’s Version)” — in April 2021 with more than a dozen bonus tracks. She did the same for three other albums in the years that followed.
Fans had been eagerly anticipating the release of the remaining two “Taylor’s Versions” re-recordings: “Reputation” and her self-titled debut. Just before Swift’s announcement about acquiring her catalog, fans speculated that “Reputation (Taylor’s Version)” would be released around Memorial Day, though Swift said that she was still hedging around the re-recording.
“What about Rep TV? Full transparency. I haven’t even re-recorded a quarter of it. The Reputation album was so specific to that time in my life, and I kept hitting a stopping point when I tried to remake it,” she stated. “Those 2 albums can still have their moments to re-emerge when the time is right, if that would be something you guys would be excited about. But if it happens, it won’t be from a place of sadness and longing for what I wish I could have. It will just be a celebration now.”
After the announcement that she’d acquired her catalog, sales of “Reputation” surged on the charts as it landed at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 with 42,000 album-equivalent units.

The album was conceived during the COVID-19 pandemic. Aaron Dessner of The National was isolating and quarantining with his family, when Swift had approached him in late April to write some songs remotely together. 11 songs were written with Dessner over the next few months, while the others were written with Jack Antonoff, William Bowery and Bon Iver. "I thought it would take a while for song ideas to come and I had no expectations as far as what we could accomplish remotely," Dessner wrote in his tweet, "But a few hours after sharing music, my phone lit up with a voice memo from Taylor of a fully written song -- the momentum never really stopped."
The album's release was announced by Swift on her social media accounts hours before its midnight, July 24, 2020, launch. It follows her seventh studio albumLover, released almost a year prior. The album has eight deluxe CDs and vinyls that are only available for a week for the physical copies, all of which have different covers and photos.
