物語のテーマは19世紀ロシア文学を代表するドストエフスキーの傑作『カラマーゾフの兄弟』。
野田はこの作品をベースに、「日本のとある時代の花火師の家族」、つまり「唐松族（からまつぞく）の兄弟」の物語を創り上げた。ストーリーは父親殺しという"事件"を扱ったサスペンスで、物語の中心となる「唐松族の兄弟」を演じるのが松本・長澤・永山だ。舞台は日本のある時代。
松本が長男の花火師、永山が次男の物理学者、長澤が三男の聖職者を演じる。物語の全貌は明らかにされていないが、「松本は心が荒廃した花火師、長澤は性格的にも真反対の“男役”と“女役”の二役を演じ分け、永山は神をも恐れぬ不敵なインテリと、3人いずれも新鮮な役どころである。」
