The story begins with Tatsumi, a young swordsman from a remote countryside village, who travels to the Imperial Capital seeking funds to save his starving home. Once he arrives, he discovers that the capital is riddled with corruption and cruelty. He stumbles upon the secret group of assassins known as Night Raid, who are fighting to overthrow the tyrannical and corrupt regime that governs the empire. Tatsumi is recruited into Night Raid and begins his journey in a world of bullets, blades, and moral conflict.

Following the horrific assault on the Re-Estize capital city, the Guardians of the Great Tomb of Nazarick return home to their master Ainz Ooal Gown. After months of laying the groundwork, they are finally ready to set their plans of world domination into action.

As Ainz’s war machine gathers strength, the rest of the world keeps moving. The remote Carne Village, which Ainz once saved from certain doom, continues to prosper despite the many threats on its doorstep. Set in modern Italy, story follows a group of traumatically-injured young girls taken from hospitals all over the country, who are then cybernetically enhanced, indoctrinated and trained to be assassins by a secret branch of the Public Corporation for Social Welfare, Section 2. Each girl is assigned to a male "handler" who oversees her training, deployments, and general conduct. Each handler is free to "condition" his cybernetic assassin to the extent he sees fit, which increases a girl’s lethality and loyalty at the expense of human individuality and lifespan.

目前动画制作的内容大致是小说的1—9卷（第1卷炎の蜃気楼，第2卷绯の残影，第3卷硝子の子守歌，第4卷琥珀の流星群，第5卷まほろばの龙神，第6卷覇者の魔镜(前编)，第7卷覇者の魔镜(中编)，第8卷覇者の魔镜(後编)，第9卷みなぎわの反逆者）。
