The 47th NHK Taiga Drama is a life story of Princess Atsu, who was born in Kagoshima Prefecture, then called Satsuma, and became the wife of Tokugawa Iesada, the 13th shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate. She accedes to the highest rank in Ooku, the inner palace of the Edo castle where women related to the reigning shogun resided. Iesada dies soon after their marriage and Atsuhime assumes the name Tenshoin at the age of 23. She exerts herself for the Tokugawa clan and for the nation during the upheaval in the Meiji Restoration, headed by those from Satsuma.

A husband and wife have been married for 50 years. For her birthday, the husband asks the wife what she wants for her birthday present. She replies that she wants a divorce. The wife's divorce announcement sends the entire family into chaos.

A spell of time in the life of a family in rural Tochigi prefecture. Yoshiko is not an ordinary housewife, instead working on an animated film project. Uncle Ayano, a successful music producer, is looking to get his head together after living in Tokyo. Meanwhile, Sachiko is concerned with why she seems to be followed by a giant version of herself. As the lazy days pass by, each member of the family is followed in a series of episodic vignettes.

Set on Hashima Island in Nagasaki Prefecture during the coal industry's rise in 1955, this story follows themes of family, friendship, and love. It contrasts the post-war era, where people had little but were full of dreams, with present-day Tokyo, where abundance prevails, but young people struggle to find their dreams.

2019年2～3月に歴代最年少で新国立劇場演劇芸術監督に就任するなど、いまや日本の演劇界を牽引する演出家の一人・小川絵梨子が、初の三島由紀夫戯曲に挑みます。
　『熱帯樹』は、フランスで実際に起きた殺人事件に、ギリシャ悲劇的構造を見出した三島が、1960年に書き下ろした全3幕の戯曲で、同年に文学座で初演されました。以降、ヨーロッパのフランス語圏を中心に頻繁に上演されるなど、『サド侯爵夫人』と並んで海外でも人気の高い三島作品です。
演出にあたり小川は「とにかく登場人物たちは全員がものすごく寂しくて孤独。それでいながら一人一人がみな強くもあり逞しくもある。そうした人々の集合体として存在する“家族”の悲劇を、現代に通じる普遍的な作品として立ち上げていきたい」と意気込みを語っています。

権力者の父親を憎みながら母と妹の異常な愛に翻弄される息子・勇役には『ローゼンクランツとギルデンスターンは死んだ』（17年/小川絵梨子演出）にも出演し、小川から信頼の厚い林遣都。愛する兄に母を殺させようとする妹・郁子役には映像を中心に幅広く活躍している岡本玲。父親の妹で4人の家族と共に暮らす風変わりな叔母・信子役には昨年シアタートラムで上演された『岸 リトラル』での熱演も記憶に新しい栗田桃子。地位や名誉を手に入れながらも、息子と対立し妻の不貞を疑わぬ父・恵三郎役には父・恵三郎役には、年齢と共に魅力を増す鶴見辰吾。そして、莫大な財産を狙い息子に夫を殺させることを企む勇の母・律子役には、舞台上で唯一無二の存在感をほこる中嶋朋子。栗田と共演した『岸 リトラル』では、鮮烈な激しさと慈愛に満ちた演技が好評を博しました。
