物語のテーマは19世紀ロシア文学を代表するドストエフスキーの傑作『カラマーゾフの兄弟』。
野田はこの作品をベースに、「日本のとある時代の花火師の家族」、つまり「唐松族（からまつぞく）の兄弟」の物語を創り上げた。ストーリーは父親殺しという"事件"を扱ったサスペンスで、物語の中心となる「唐松族の兄弟」を演じるのが松本・長澤・永山だ。舞台は日本のある時代。
