German-Jewish cabaret singer Nelly survived Auschwitz but had to undergo reconstructive surgery as her face was disfigured. Without recognizing Nelly, her former husband Johnny asks her to help him claim his wife’s inheritance. To see if he betrayed her, she agrees, becoming her own doppelganger.

When one of her students is suspected of theft, teacher Carla Nowak decides to get to the bottom of the matter. Caught between her ideals and the school system, the consequences of her actions threaten to break her.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall, a communist family discovers a bunker full of money soon to be worthless. With the help of their neighbors, they embark on a race against time to enter the capitalist world in style.

Helen is a nonconformist teenage girl who maintains a conflictual relationship with her parents. Hanging out most of her time with her friend Corinna, with whom she breaks one social taboo after another, she uses sex as a way to rebel and break the conventional bourgeois ethic. After an intimate shaving accident, Helen ends up in the hospital where it doesn’t take long before she makes waves. But there she finds Robin, a male nurse who will sweep her off her feet...

Its songs are legendary and its essentially trivial story about love, betrayal, business and morals underwent an equally insolent and intelligent revision regarding its social criticism: The Dreigroschenoper (Threepenny Opera), premiered at this very theatre in 1928 was an unexpected, world-wide overnight success. “Food first, morals next”, as the famous quote goes – however, a life in prosperity may be comfortable, but it is by no means a guarantee for a good one. Mack the Knife, Peachum and the others are more or less forced to keep their eyes on their own material advantage and to make considerable theatrical efforts to be able to look out for number one and, at the same time, to conceal this very fact. After all: Who wouldn’t prefer to be good?



Barrie Kosky, well-known to the Berlin audience as Principal and Artistic Director of Komische Oper, will create the fifth new production of Dreigroschenoper at this theatre.
