Erik, a loner, finds a friend in Dexter, an eleven-year-old boy with AIDS. They vow to find a cure for AIDS together and save Dexter's life in an eventful summer.

George and Ursula now have a son, George Junior, so Ursula's mother arrives to try and take them back to "civilization".

In the early days of World War II, a German U-boat is sunk in Canada's Hudson Bay. Along the way, he fends off the distractions offered by women, drinking and gambling.
